Tony’s Top 10 At PIR \\ No. 8

Phoenix Raceway remembers 10 of Tony Stewart's top moments in the Valley of the Sun before he takes his last ride around the desert oval on Nov. 13, 2016 in the Can-Am 500 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup semi-final race. For the eighth moment, we asked Phoenix Raceway President Bryan R. Sperber for his favorite memory with “Smoke” over his many years at and around the track.

Phoenix Raceway President Bryan R. Sperber’s Top Tony Moment:

“We were doing some post-repave testing. We had not run a race yet on the asphalt, so Tony was here to do some testing and one of the things we were going to do was figure out what we could do to get the racing surface in the best condition possible before the race. So we were thinking about a whole bunch of different ideas. Tony hopped in my car with me, him behind the wheel, and a couple of the NASCAR officials in the back and we took some laps around the track. He had some suggestions about how to drag tires, we brought out a bunch of driving school stock cars driven by former race car drivers and had them turn thousands of laps. So Tony physically got out of the car and placed cones, saying ‘You need to have them turn laps here and into this groove’ to put rubber into the groove. Tony played an instrumental role in helping to get the track in the best possible condition for its debut.”
