Tony’s Top 10 At PIR \\ No. 9

Phoenix Raceway remembers 10 of Tony Stewart's top moments in the Valley of the Sun before he takes his last ride around the desert oval on Nov. 13, 2016 in the Can-Am 500 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Semi-Final Race. The No. 9 moment takes a look back on when Stewart would serve as honorary official and winner in the same weekend at Phoenix Raceway.

“I am really looking forward to getting back to Phoenix to attend this year’s Copper World Classic, and serving as the Grand Marshal is a true honor. PIR is one of my all-time favorite tracks, and I really enjoy seeing all my friends back in that area,” said Tony Stewart.

Little did he know, he wouldn’t garner the spotlight that weekend for just the Grand Marshal honor. Not surprising to ZOOMTOWN, U.S.A.® Phoenix International Raceway fans, Stewart added Victory Lane to his stops at PIR that weekend.

The reigning NASCAR Rookie of the Year in 1999 couldn’t help but return to his roots and once again get behind the wheel in the USAC Midget race. Stewart was coming off his first NASCAR victory, in his first elite series start, at Phoenix in November of 1999 and in true “Smoke” fashion, would jump in the car where it all began.

In the 23rd annual running of the Copper World Classic at Phoenix Raceway, Stewart scored a win in the MCI WorldCom USAC Midget Car Series. It marked his fourth overall USAC win at Phoenix.
